Shape of Camp in Wilderness

Question

What was the shape of the camp of the children of Israel in the wilderness, Numbers 2:2?

I have read theories of a circle or a square – do we know?

  1. According to the Torah’s description of how the Tribes were assigned, it would seem that the shape of the camp was a square. There were three Tribes on each side, with the Levites in the middle and the Holy Ark with the Ten Commandments in the very center.
