Missing in Action

Question

If a soldier is missing in action, since there is no body but there is still a chance that he is alive, what is the rule regarding sitting shiva and a funeral service? Especially if his parents think that he might still be alive?

  1. Under such circumstances the accepted approach is not to sit shivah until there is extremely compelling evidence that the missing soldier is dead. Until there is such evidence the family does not mourn in the hope that their child will return alive.
