Community Event on Shabbat

Question

Is there any issue with hosting a community event on a Saturday? We have an opportunity for the Southern Poverty Law Center to speak at our synagogue on the topic of “Hate and Intolerance In Our Community.” A Saturday is the only day available.

  1. The Rabbis teach that our actions and speech are supposed to reflect the spirituality of Shabbat and that means, in general, that we should not talk about things that are not related to Shabbat. But there are always exceptions to the rule and the Rabbi of your community, who is the spiritual decisor, should decide whether this is one of them.
