High Holiday Torah Reading Tune

Why is the Torah read in a different melody on high holidays? What is the origin of this unique melody?

  1. The Rabbis teach that the High Holidays are so solemn and important that they warrant their own tune for the Torah Reading, one which echoes the seriousness of the day. This is why the tune is different on both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. On Sukkot, the tune reverts back to the familiar tune.
