The Nature of Chuppah

Question

Is chuppah an actual obligation, or just minhag? Is it biblical or rabbinic? Also is there a minimum height of the chuppah?

  1. The word Chuppah is taken from Tanach, see Yishayah 4:5. The custom for Jews to marry under the Chuppah goes all the way back to Adam and Chavah. Osiyos d’Rabbi Akivah describes how Hashem, Himself, erected the Chuppah that Adam and Chavah married under.

There is no minimum height, per se, for the Chuppah. But, obviously it must be tall enough that the people standing underneath it may do so easily.
