How were spices used in the 1700's, comapred to how they are used today?

I've been discussing social dynamics recently with a friend who comes from a conservative, but not strictly Orthodox or Hassidic Jewish family--and she has had plenty of bad experiences, lack of opportunities and simple "family fairness" in her life compared to her brothers, as a result of what I feel is a prevalent, and demeaning social role of women within Judaism. Is there a reason you can give to explain why this still persists, after centuries?

I have been observant for over 20 years (I am reluctant to call myself ba'al teshuvah as I am a long way from "mastering" teshuvah) . During that time I have kept Shabbat & Yomim Tovim, kosher, davened every day and spent time learning. However, I have not been able to master Hebrew and so davening for me is "meaningless". I have tried in English but that has felt empty. I was recently asked why I do it and while I was able to answer I wasn't happy with my own answer. My question is: what is the point of spending hours saying words that are meaningless and effectively gibberish for me? Has there been any benefit for the world or me in this? If the answer is that this builds and develops a relationship between Hashem and me then my response is that since becoming observant I have never felt the closeness to Hashem and His active involvement in my life that I felt before becoming observant. This was one of the main factors in my becoming observant in the first place. I loo

my wife refuses to have relations with me even though we hug and kiss sometimes. she refuses because of fear of preganancy. she refuses to discuss birth control even though a rabbi has given the ok. in such a case is male masturbation allowed inasmuch as it is not being done to avoid pregnancy like onan DID in the story of Tamar? if i can convince her, would oral sex be allowed male on female or female on male? thanks
