Identification of Fruits

Question

How do we know that the fruits that we identify as grapes, dates, figs, pomegranates, and olives in modern times are the same ones as described in the Torah for the purpose of the bracha acharona?

    What a fascinating question! Presumably, the accepted approach is to rely on the tradition that each fruit is what it is unless it is categorically proved otherwise. But, on a more practical note, there are many different descriptions of the fruits found in the Talmud and Midrashic texts, and they all seem to be describing the fruits that we call by those names today.
