Hebrew Name

Question

Although I know the majority of Hebrew names are biblical/of Jewish origin, I’d like know if you take a non-Hebrew name and translate, can it be used as one? Provided the name is compatible with being translated, of course.

  1. In theory, any name can be transliterated into Hebrew and become a person’s Jewish name. However, the Rabbis teach us that a person’s name is closely related to their spiritual potential and their soul. If so, it would be a shame to turn a non-Jewish name into one’s Jewish name. Personally, I would suggest for anyone who was never given a Jewish name to give themselves a Jewish name that they feel a particular affinity to, and to use that name as their Jewish name.
