Question

According to the Halacha, is it permitted for Jews to eat or drink during kriat Sh’ma, or no is that prohibited as a hefsek? Or no, is it not necessarily a hefsek to fulfilling the mitzvah? Sources please

  1. I am not sure that I understand the premise of the question. Under normal circumstances it is forbidden to eat before davening – it is clear that during davening is even more severe. The Shulchan Aruch rules, 151, that it is forbidden to eat in a Beis HaKenesses. How much more so during davening. Together with that, the Shulchan Aruch rules, 63, that it is forbidden to any activity during Krias Shema. That certainly includes eating and drinking.
