Chol Hamoed: Attending Wedding

Question

My cousin is culturally Jewish but not observant. He is getting married to a Jewish woman on Chol Hamoed Passover. I have learned that weddings are not supposed to be held on Chol Hamoed. I already said I was coming before I realized the date. Is attending such a wedding permitted?

  1. As you point out, our Sages forbid marrying on Chol HaMoed. In theory, this means that you should not attend the wedding. If, however, the couple is having a wedding ceremony that otherwise follows the Halacha, and your not attending will be the cause of ill feeling, I would suggest that you speak with a local authority (I live in Israel) to see if it might be possible to be lenient in this particular situation.
