Changing One’s Name

Question

Is there a method within Jewish law to change one’s Hebrew name from the name one was assigned by their parents at birth for any reason, such as if one does not like their name?

  1. In theory, it is possible for an adult to change their name. However, because the Kabbalists teach that a person’s name has tremendous significance and is not something that should be changed without a compelling reason, I think that the best thing to do would be for you to speak with a righteous and pious Rabbi to ascertain whether it is the correct thing to do. If he agrees, he should be able to take care of the details for you.
