Nuts on Rosh Hashanah

Question

Is it really that bad to eat nuts on Rosh Hashanah?

Answers

  1. In the greater picture, not really. We do not eat nuts because the Hebrew word for nut – egoz – in Gematria has the same numerical value as sin – chet. The Chidushei HaRim, first Rebbe from Gur, used to say that he knows another word that has the same Gematria as chet and that is…chet! Often people are super-careful about not eating nuts over the Rosh Hashanah period but they may not be quite as careful about not sinning.
