“Niddah”

Question

I was told that a woman on her cycle is called in a niddah state. And that means she is spiritually separated. Is this correct? And if so, how does she regain being pure again?

  1. Yes, that is correct. A woman who experiences a menstrual discharge is considered to be “ritually impure.” In order to return to a state of ritual purity, the woman must wait a minimum of five days from the onset of the bleeding, or until the bleeding finishes. She then enters into what are called the “seven clean days.” Twice a day, she needs to make a simple inspection to make sure that there are no traces of blood. After seven days, she immerses in the Mikveh and reverts back to being ritually pure.

These laws are applicable only to married women. Single women do not do any of the above, unless it is preparation for the wedding ceremony.
