Great Fire at Mount Sinai

Question

There is a verse regarding the time when the Torah was given at Mount Sinai:
“Now, therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the Lord our God any more, then we shall die.” (Devarim 5:21)

Why would the great fire consume them if they would hear the voice of Hashem any longer?

  1. The Voice of Hashem was so spiritually overpowering that the Jewish Nation was not capable of absorbing it without the people having to divest themselves of their physicality. This is a general rule that appears over and over again within the Torah. Only Moses was capable of retaining his physical being while he was receiving the Word of God.
