Child Born Out of Wedlock

Question

Can a single, unmarried man have a legitimately recognized child with a surrogate? Or will the child still be considered a bastard?

  1. While it is completely prohibited for a couple to have a sexual relationship outside of marriage, any child born by a woman who is not married to anyone else has no stigma according to Jewish Law. The concept of a “bastard” does not apply in Judaism. A child born of an adulterous relationship is classified as a “mamzer” in Jewish law, and repercussions of being a mamzer are far-reaching.
