My college professor is Jewish and when she writes God on the board she won't write it out fully. Example: G-d. Why is that?

I married a bas cohen. I recently found out that before her parents were married her mother was raped. Not only that but she had a baby with her boyfriend. She gave up the baby and years later met the man who is now her husband (nothing to do with the question really). Doesn't that make her pasul to marry a cohen?! I'm so confused! If so, what does that do to all their children AND TO MINE!?
