Question
I have found myself in a difficult situation. I am married to a practicing Catholic, and have 2 amazing daughters (ages 4 and 2). I had what I thought were clear discussions with my wife, prior to having children, regarding the importance of imparting my Jewish heritage to my children, including their preparation for bar/bat mitzvahs, and involvement in issues related to Israel. She agreed, at the time, that educating them as Jews seemed reasonable, provided I allow them to be baptised (which was subsequently honored), and that I keep her Catholicism respected and not completely shutout. I love my wfe, and eagerly accepted her deal. However, since the children were born, my wife has insisted that raising the children as BOTH religions, enjoying the benefits and strengths of each, is a plausible solution. She has researched this issue endlessly, and has buried me in literature and personal accounts of adults who credit their multi-religious backgrounds as the bedrock of their deeply fulfilling adult lives. She even has produced a home-schooling, interfaith educational curriculum which has further strengthened her position that this is possible. I am a fervent believer that two religions equal NO religion. That one MUST be dominant, and adopted as the religious structure that will guide them through a time of endless questions and/or issues of faith that Judaism had so deeply instilled in my childhood. You can't solve my marital issue that has now created resentment and mistrust. But you can share with me your opinion about whether a household with two powerful religions can be navigated in such a way that our children grow up steadfast in their faith in G-d, and comfortable with their interfaith upbringing. - David F. p.s. It makes no difference in your response, but you may find it interesting that my wife's maternal grandmother was a German Jewish holocaust survivor who converted to Catholicism in 1939, and subsequently married a German Catholic producing four children including my Catholic mother-in-law!! Go figure!
