What is the rationale for prohibiting turning on the light on Shabbat?

DearRabbi: What do you think of a Rabbi who encourages a couple to stay together even though he knows that the husband has been abusive during the 9 years of their marriage? In addition, the husband refused to go for counseling and did not allow my daughter (his wife) to seek counseling. She is religious and feels that the words of their Rabbi are the only words she should obey. I am totally upset by this as he is not a real father to the children even though he is the biological father. He has been cruel to them and the mother. Shalom

I was born left handed and therefore have always worn my tefillin shel yad on my right arm. I now have a neurological problem which causes tremors in my left hand, so that at 48 years old (I am now 56) I found myself having to learn to write with my right hand. My question is on which arm should I wear my tefillin at this point? A few points that may be relevant. I still think of myself as left-handed. Secondly, the disturbance is in my brain, not directly in my arm. Finally, I believe that my left arm remains naturally stronger, but it is easier to exercise my right arm as the stabilization muscles in my left arm don't work well. Thanking you in advance, Avram

I have considered the position of some Jews that claim, that the government and the return to the land of Israel now called a republic is sinful.These orthodox jews assert that today's Israel violates the Shabat, that stores sell bread on passover, that the land is filled with prostitution and with bloodshed, that most jews now in the holy land are not religious. They say that jews are under jewish law and that Israel is a secular society. These Jews believe that the restoration of Israel should only take place in the Messianic era and not now. Is there a scriptural basis or injunction that forbids today's Israel?
