The Obligation to Vote

Question

Shalom aleichem Rabbi Lauffer. Thank you for answering my last question. Poskim in the past have ruled that it is a mitzvah to vote. Would this still hold true in countries like America, where the elections are rigged and one’s vote doesn’t count, chas v’shalom? Thanks.

  1. As far as I am aware all the Gedolim in America emphasized the obligation that each Jew has to vote in national elections. Even if there seems pretty certain that a vote will have no chance to make a change in the final result (as it might seem to be the case in many states), one should still vote, because that is what the Gedolim say to do.
