Sitting Shivah for a Great-Aunt

Question

Can you do sitting shiva for your grand ma or grand ante even if you do not stay at the place where she lived? My grand ante passed away last Sunday, so 8 days ago, and I believe has been buried today or tomorrow

  1. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your great-aunt.

In general, it is permitted to sit Shivah anywhere. The Shivah does not have to be in the place that the deceased lived. However, the Torah teaches is that ones sits Shivah only for immediate family members. That includes: mother, father, wife, husband, brother, sister and child. The list does not include grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles or great-aunts and great-uncles.
