Psalm 137

Question

My favorite Psalm is Psalm 137. I am wondering where (what specific location) it was discovered? and were there many copies made of Psalm 137 for people to enjoy from afar, kinda like a song today and how we have multiple copies of the same song worldwide?

Thanks,

Caleb

  1. Psalm 137 is truly beautiful! (Disclaimer: I actually would have written that for any other psalm that you might have mentioned as they are all beautiful!)

Psalm 137 was not “discovered”. The Talmud, Tractate Gittin 57b, explains that the psalm was authored by King David. He was granted Divine Inspiration and he saw prophetically that both the First Temple and the Second Temple were destined to be destroyed. Due to the fact that it centers around the concept of the destruction of the Holy Temple, it has a certain melancholic side to it. However, despite its bleak subject matter, it also contains the understanding that we are ready and waiting for the rebuilding of the Temple, in all its glory, in Jerusalem.
