    The verse in Exodus 22:21 states, “Do not mistreat a widow or an orphan.”

    The Sefer Hachinuch (by Rabbi Aharon HaLevi from Barcelona) explains that this special protection includes not treating them harshly with words or actions. One should speak to them and treat them in an exceedingly kind, pleasant and fair manner.
