Maaser and Raffle Tickets

Question

Many Jewish organizations run raffle campaigns to raise money for themselves. If I buy a raffle ticket and it loses, am I entitled to deduct the cost of the raffle from my Maaser account?

Answers

  1. It is permissible to use maaser money for many of the raffles that Jewish institutions have. However, the tickets need to be bought with maaser money from the onset as it is forbidden to use maaser money retroactively to pay for the tickets. If a person wins a prize he must deduct the cost of the winning ticket from his maaser money and pay for the winning ticket with his own money.
