Drinking Uncovered Water

Question

I’ve heard that you should not drink water that was left uncovered overnight. I have a kettle that has a closed lid with water in it, but its spout is not covered. Does that count as uncovered water or not?

  1. The accepted custom is not to be concerned about liquids that have been left uncovered overnight. The Talmud teaches that there was a concern in those days that a snake may have left its venom in a container that was left uncovered overnight. Tosafos writes that the concern is not really applicable anymore and therefore there is no problem with leaving water uncovered overnight.
