Why do we cover matzah?

  1. I am not sure that I understand exactly what you are asking. If you are asking why we cover the matzah at the Yom Tov and Shabbos table, it is because they are the same as the challahs that are eaten on Shabbos and Yom Tov throughout the year.

    The reason that the matzah and challos are covered during Kiddush is because, in the order of precedence for blessings, bread comes before wine. But on Shabbos and Yom Tov we recite the blessing over the wine before the blessing over the challah (or matzah). In order not to “slight” the challah in any way, we cover the challahs up, and uncover them only when we are ready to make the blessing over them.
