Altar of Stone

Question

“If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it.” (Shemot 20:25)

So, how was the altar made?

Answers

  1. The verse is referring to the concept that the stones used in building of the altar in the Holy Temple could not be cut with any kind of iron tool. Iron is used in the manufacture of weapons of war and, therefore, iron has no place in the Temple which is the ultimate symbol of peace.

  3. There is no altar nowadays and there will not be one until the Third Temple is built and the Messiah rules over us as God’s ambassador in this world.
