DNA
Question
This is a bit of a complicated question. My brother Michael (who is Jewish) married a girl (Sarah) about 15 years ago, who, we thought was Presbyterian. For one reason or another, Sarah's mother recently got a DNA test done which proved (through mytochondrial DNA) that she (the mother) is an Ashkenazi Jew. As you know, this type of DNA is only transmitted through females, which would indicate that Sarah is also a Jew. Questions: 1. does the Hallachah recognize this type of test as valid proof? Assuming that the test is valid: 2. what happens to my brother and his wife's marriage (never performed under a chuppah) 3. what happens to their children (Hannah - 12) and Jack-9 (circumsized surgically at birth)? Thank you!
