Hardening Pharaoh’s Heart

Question

“And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.” (Shemot 7:3).

I read the verse tonight and suddenly a question come to mind: If Hashem hardened Pharaoh’s mind, does he always hardened the minds of other wicked people who are like Pharaoh?

  1. No, that was an almost unique occurrence. The Rabbis teach that Pharaoh had reached the lowest level of spirituality possible, and he was so wicked that he lost his free will.

When God hardened Pharaoh’s heart, this was the manner in which God took away Pharaoh’s free will and left him as a pawn in the Divine Plan of what needed to happen next and be revealed to the world.
