Fire for Heat on Shabbat

Question

Dear Rabbis,

If you heat your home primarily with an open, wood-burning fireplace; what do you do on/during Shabbat? How can you keep your home warm? Would the fire have to be started before Shabbat and continued through the Sabbath?

Thank you for your time

  1. The only way that a wood-burning fireplace can be used on Shabbat is by making sure that it is lit before the onset of Shabbat and by not adding any more wood to it during Shabbat. This means that there must either be enough wood in the fireplace to keep it burning throughout the whole of Shabbat, or an alternative heating source has to be used (coming with a time-clock) once the wood has burned out.
