Western Wall

What is the origin of the Western Wall? Was it actually part of the Temple?

No it was not. The Western Wall is one of the retaining walls that circled the Temple. As it is the closest remaining physical remnant of the original Temple it is regarded as being of great spiritual importance. The Western Wall is actually much longer than it seems at first glance and there are other walls as well that were part of the original structure.
