Are birthday celebrations prohibited?

No, they are not. Just as in the rest of the world, birthdays are looked upon in Judaism as being milestones. The only difference is that they are also considered to be very opportune moments for introspection and to try and reach a clearer understanding of what the person has achieved over the year in order to be able to face the future in a more confident manner.
